# Can't Open a Position on Entropy? Causes and Fixes

> Order rejected on Entropy? Work through the open interest cap, delisted markets, LULD bands, agent limits and geo checks with the exact error each one produces.

*Source: https://entropyguides.com/troubleshooting/cannot-open-position*

If Entropy will not let you open a position, the first thing to check is not your balance. It is the **open interest cap** on the market you are trying to trade. Entropy's frontend gates every market behind a check that reduces to this:

```
isOpenable = !isDelisted && !atOpenInterestCap
```

Two conditions, and neither one has anything to do with how much USDC you are holding. If the market is delisted, or if total open interest across every trader has hit the cap Entropy set for it, the market is closed for new positions and no amount of margin changes that.

Below is a diagnostic table, then a section per cause with the actual fix. Everything here was checked on **August 26, 2026** against the live API and Entropy's shipped error catalog.

![The io:ANTH terminal on entropy.io showing the 3x leverage badge, mark and oracle prices, 24h volume and open interest in the header strip, with the red geographic restriction banner visible above the order ticket](/images/shared/entropy-anth-terminal.webp)

That header strip is where you check open interest before you place an order. The red banner at the top of the same screenshot is a separate cause covered further down, and it is the one people most often mistake for a bug.

## Diagnostic table

| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Market shows but the buy and sell buttons do nothing | Open interest cap reached | Wait for OI to fall, or trade the other Entropy market |
| Market page loads with no order ticket at all | Market is delisted | Nothing to fix; the market is closed permanently |
| Red banner across the terminal, all data still streaming | Geographic restriction | See the restricted countries page |
| "Order size is too small for this market" | Below the market minimum | Increase the order size |
| "Enable trading to place orders with this wallet" | No agent key approved in this browser | Re-run the enable-trading signature |
| Order silently rejected outside US market hours on `io:SNDK` | LULD band | Reprice inside the band or wait for the cash session |
| Reduce-only order rejected | No open position to reduce | Uncheck reduce-only |
| "TWAP duration must be between 5 and 1,440 minutes" | Out-of-range TWAP | Set a duration in that window |
| "Wallet compliance screening did not pass" | Failed automated wallet screen | Contact Entropy support; we cannot help with this |
| "Switch your wallet to chain 42161" | Wallet on the wrong chain | Switch to Arbitrum One |
| Cannot approve a new agent or builder | Hyperliquid per-wallet caps | Revoke an old one first |

## Cause 1: the open interest cap (the one that will actually bite you)

**Symptom.** The market renders fine. Prices stream, the chart is live, and your balance is right there in the panel. The order ticket refuses to send a position-increasing order anyway.

**Cause.** Entropy sets a hard ceiling on total open interest per market, and the frontend checks it before letting you open. The cap is a property of the market, shared across every trader on it, so a single large participant filling the remaining room closes the door on everybody.

Here is the state of both of Entropy's own markets on August 26, 2026 at roughly 14:00 UTC:

| Market | Underlying | Open interest | Cap | Utilization |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| `io:ANTH` | Anthropic (pre-IPO) | ~$3.33M | $5,000,000 | ~66.6% |
| `io:SNDK` | SanDisk (equity) | ~$4.73M | 10,000,000 | ~47.3% |

The ANTH cap was raised to $5M on **August 25, 2026**, one day before those readings. Two thirds of it was already used the following afternoon. On a venue that took its first trade on August 19, this is not a theoretical constraint.

> **Warning:** **Docs and API disagree on the `io:SNDK` cap.** Entropy's documentation states 5M. The Hyperliquid API reports **10,000,000**. Trust the API. It is the value the exchange actually enforces, and the docs on this seven-day-old venue lag the configuration.

**Fix.**

1. **Check the live number before blaming your account.** Post `{"type":"metaAndAssetCtxs","dex":"io"}` to `https://api.hyperliquid.xyz/info` and read the open interest against the cap for the asset. Any figure published anywhere, including on this page, is a snapshot.
2. **Wait.** Caps clear as other traders close. Open interest on a market this size can move several percent in an hour.
3. **Close, do not open.** Reduce-only orders are not blocked by the cap. If you already have a position, you can always get out.
4. **Watch for a cap raise.** Entropy raised the ANTH cap once already. The key that can call `setOpenInterestCaps` is a separate operator key from the one that registers assets, and changes appear on-chain without an announcement.

Note what a cap does to price. When new longs cannot open, the mechanism that normally pulls a perp back toward its reference is throttled, and on `io:ANTH` the mark is derived from Entropy's own order book rather than an external blend. We cover that in the [Anthropic pre-IPO perp guide](/guides/trading/anthropic-pre-ipo-perp).

## Cause 2: the market is delisted

**Symptom.** You found a ticker, the page loads, and there is no way to trade it.

**Cause.** The `io` dex has **five registered assets and only two live markets**. Three are flagged delisted and have never recorded a single trade:

| Ticker | Underlying | Last recorded price | Trades ever |
|---|---|---|---|
| `io:OAI` | OpenAI | 1250 | 0 |
| `io:IONQ` | IonQ | 44.61 | 0 |
| `io:NBIS` | Nebius | 221.97 | 0 |

Those are real registrations with real parameters that never opened. Entropy has published no explanation, and we do not speculate about why. If you arrived here looking for the OpenAI market on Entropy, that is the answer: it is registered, it is delisted, and it has zero candles.

**Fix.** There is none. Entropy's live markets are `io:ANTH` and `io:SNDK`, and that is the whole list. Everything else on the entropy.io frontend is somebody else's market, which matters more than it sounds. Of the 319 markets the frontend aggregates, 317 are deployed by other Hyperliquid HIP-3 deployers, mostly trade.xyz. If a `xyz:` market is not opening, that is trade.xyz's cap and trade.xyz's listing decision, not Entropy's. See [HIP-3 explained](/ecosystem/hip-3-explained) for who controls what.

## Cause 3: LULD bands on equity markets

**Symptom.** Your order is rejected outside US market hours, usually on `io:SNDK`, with no obvious problem in the ticket.

**Cause.** Outside the underlying's regular cash session, Entropy confines trading on equity and index perpetuals to a band around a reference price: `P_ref × (1 ± 1/Λ)`. For `io:SNDK`, Λ = 10, so the band is **±10%**. Entropy's documentation is explicit: *"Orders that would execute through a band are rejected."*

**Fix.** Reprice inside the band, or wait for the cash session to open, at which point the band lifts and the mark switches to the market-hours formula. There is more on how SNDK prices behave overnight in the [SanDisk SNDK perp guide](/guides/trading/sandisk-sndk-perp).

> **Note:** `io:ANTH` has no LULD band, because Anthropic is private and has no cash session. It has extreme mark bounds instead, at L = 300 and U = 4,200. Those bounds clip the published mark and oracle only. Entropy's docs say the order book itself *"remains unrestricted"* and that *"trades may execute outside the bounds"*.

## Cause 4: order size below the market minimum

**Symptom.** "Order size is too small for this market."

**Cause.** Each market carries a minimum order size, and small-notional test orders fall under it. This bites people trying to place a $5 order to see whether everything works.

**Fix.** Increase the size. If you are testing, test with an amount above the minimum and close it straight away. Fees are small enough that the round trip costs almost nothing at the rates both Entropy markets currently run, which we break down in [Entropy fees explained](/guides/fees/entropy-fees-explained).

---

## Cause 5: trading is not enabled for this wallet

**Symptom.** "Enable trading to place orders with this wallet."

**Cause.** Entropy does not sign every order with your main wallet. It generates a **browser-local secp256k1 agent key**, stores it AES-GCM encrypted in IndexedDB under `entropy-agent`, and has your master wallet approve it once with an EIP-712 `ApproveAgent` signature. The approval lasts roughly **179 days**.

That key lives in one browser profile. Clear site data, switch browsers, use a different device, or open an incognito window, and it is gone.

**Fix.** Run the enable-trading step again and sign the approval. Two things to know before you panic:

- **Your funds are not affected.** The agent key cannot withdraw. Withdrawals need a separate `HyperliquidTransaction:Withdraw` signature from the master wallet.
- **The flip side is a security consideration.** Anyone with access to that browser profile has a trading key valid for months. See [is Entropy safe](/privacy/is-entropy-safe).

## Cause 6: you have hit Hyperliquid's per-wallet approval caps

**Symptom.** The enable-trading step fails outright, with a message about how many API agents or builders a wallet can have.

**Cause.** These are Hyperliquid limits, not Entropy limits, and they apply across every frontend you have ever used on that wallet:

| Limit | Cap |
|---|---|
| Unnamed API agents per wallet | 1 |
| Named API agents per wallet | 3 |
| Builder approvals per wallet | 10 |

If you have connected several Hyperliquid frontends over time, you can arrive at Entropy already at the ceiling.

**Fix.** Revoke agents or builder approvals you no longer use from the API management screen on Hyperliquid, then retry. Entropy cannot raise these for you.

## Cause 7: the wallet is on the wrong chain

**Symptom.** "Switch your wallet to chain 42161."

**Cause.** Chain 42161 is ** Arbitrum One**, which is where USDC collateral is bridged from. If MetaMask or whichever wallet you are using is sitting on Ethereum mainnet, Base or anything else, signature and deposit flows refuse.

**Fix.** Switch the network in your wallet to Arbitrum One and reload. If the funds themselves are the problem rather than the network selector, [deposit not arriving](/troubleshooting/deposit-not-arriving) covers the money-movement failures in detail.

## Cause 8: the wallet screening call did not pass

**Symptom.** "Wallet compliance screening did not pass."

**Cause.** Entropy runs connected addresses through an automated screen at `POST /api/compliance/wallet-screen`. The shipped bundle is named `elliptic-screening-*.js`, which points at Elliptic as the provider, though Elliptic is named in none of Entropy's legal documents.

**Fix.** This is not something EntropyGuides can help with, and it is not something a different browser will solve. Entropy's own support route is `support@entropy.io`. We are an independent site with no account access and no ability to intervene. Anyone who direct-messages you offering to fix a screening result is a scammer.

## Cause 9: the geographic restriction

**Symptom.** A red banner across the trading terminal. Everything else on the site works.

**Cause.** Entropy's Terms of Service section 2.2 names the United States, Canada, Panama and the United Kingdom as Restricted Jurisdictions, and the frontend enforces a trading-scoped block at the entropy.io edge. From a US IP, `GET https://entropy.io/api/geo/status` returns `{"restricted":true,"country":"US","mode":"trading","reason":"country"}`.

**Fix.** There is nothing to fix in the product sense, and we do not publish workarounds. The full breakdown of what the terms say, what is checked, and what is not, is in [Entropy restricted countries](/privacy/entropy-restricted-countries). That page is also where the not-legal-advice caveat lives, and it applies here too.

## Cause 10: order-flag combinations that are not allowed

**Symptom.** The ticket rejects a combination that looks reasonable.

**Cause.** Several flags on Entropy's order form are mutually exclusive:

- **Reduce-only requires an open position.** With nothing open, there is nothing to reduce, and the order is refused.
- **TWAP duration must be between 5 and 1,440 minutes.** Anything shorter or longer than a day is rejected outright.
- **Write priority is IOC-only** and cannot be combined with attached TP/SL brackets. Priority fees are also paid from undelegated staked HYPE, so a wallet with none cannot use it.
- **TP/SL cannot be combined with reduce-only.**

**Fix.** Drop the conflicting flag. If you are new to the order form, [how to trade on Entropy](/guides/getting-started/how-to-trade-on-entropy) walks the whole ticket including the bracket options.

> **Key takeaway:** Run the checks in this order: is the market delisted, is it at its open interest cap, is trading enabled in this browser, is the wallet on chain 42161, and is there a geo banner. Those five account for almost every "I cannot open a position" on Entropy today. Your balance is almost never the problem.

![Entropy's documentation page listing the io:ANTH pre-IPO asset parameters, including maximum leverage, extreme mark bounds, funding multiplier and the growth mode flag](/images/shared/entropy-docs-pre-ipo-assets.webp)

Entropy's own asset parameters page is worth bookmarking. It is where leverage caps, mark bounds and the funding multiplier are published, and it is the fastest way to sanity-check whether an order is being refused by a market rule rather than by your account. Note that the docs and the API do not always agree, as with the SNDK cap above, and the API wins.
